Throughout October and November, ten Year 9 pupils were given the opportunity to attend Maths Club, a programme ran by Shaping Futures and hosted by Liverpool John Moores University. Every Tuesday from 4-5pm, students participated in a wide range of mathematical activities at LJMU’s Redmonds Building, which includes puzzles and competitions that ranged from basic maths, up to A-Level standard. The questions helped students to develop good habits when tackling exam-style questions, while also promoting mathematics education beyond Holly Lodge!

Year 9 student Nikki found the experience “very educational and enjoyable”. She added “the activities were quite challenging, and we performed a lot of trial and error, however they were still solvable”.

Most of the problems required students to “read the question”, as this is one of the biggest reasons that students lose marks at GCSE. This helped make pupils more aware of the marks they were losing.

We would like to thank LJMU Outreach and Shaping Futures for running the programme. We are looking forward to enrolling more students onto the programme in January 2019!

The Maths Department also run our own Holly Lodge Maths Club for pupils in Years 7-9, every Wednesday from 3-4pm. All pupils are welcome.
